Winter finally arrived in South Africa with a bang and the best place to be is cuddled up before the fireplace, woolly socks and a cup of hot cocoa! But with Winter expect an onslaught on your skin that will make you wish you took a trip to the tropics! Brace yourself for dryness, itchiness, sensitivity and seriously dehydrated skin.
Besides soothing your skin with a top-notch skincare routine, here are some other tips to make sure your skin stays radiant with a healthy glow:
Control the temperature
If you are already suffering from skin sensitivity, rosacea, eczema or any other form of inflammation of the skin, change in temperature can aggravate the conditions. Even though cuddling up in front of the fireplace might be nice, your skin might not feel the same. Best is to keep your home temperature to a low or moderate temperature to avoid extra dryness in the air.
The dryer the air, the dryer your skin. If you are living in an area where the weather is cold, crisp and dry, it is advisable to make use of a humidifier to increase moisture levels in the air.
Change your diet
Increase your intake of healthy fatty foods such as avocados, nuts, olive oil and oily fish. Also, a glass of red wine sounds like a great way to warm up, try to limit the intake of alcohol and caffeine. Drink plenty of water.
Yungskin has an arsenal of dryness-fighting products to lock in moisture, keep the skin hydrated and ensure a healthy Winter’s glow.

The importance of protecting your skin against the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays cannot be emphasised enough.
Applying sunscreen on a daily basis is an essential part of an anti-ageing and age-management skincare regime.
The False Perception about Sunscreen
Unfortunately, many people believe that we only require sun protection during summer holidays, when going to the beach or when participating in sport events and outdoor activities.
However, nothing could be further from the truth!
Leading Dermatologists call sunscreen the one anti-ageing product everyone can afford, and believe that it might be the key to the fountain of youth!
Additionally, they advise that sunscreen should be applied EVERY DAY, even if one is not exposed to the sun.
Sunscreen facts you should consider
Did you know that as much as 80% of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays can penetrate your skin on a cloudy winter day?
UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the thickest layer of your skin. Unprotected exposure can lead to premature skin ageing and wrinkling (photo-ageing), and suppression of your immune system.
Furthermore, UVB rays usually burn the superficial layer of your skin, e.g. sunburn or skin reddening – which can lead to the development of skin disorders.
But darker skin doesn’t burn?
Regardless of your skin colour, we all need sunscreen! Obviously very fair-skinned people need a bit more than darker skin people, however, having a dark skin doesn’t mean you are exempt.
What to look for in a Sunscreen?
A good sunscreen should have both UVA & UVB protection.
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of how well a sunscreen will protect skin from UVB rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn, damages skin, and can contribute to skin cancer.
However, SPF does not measure how well a sunscreen will protect you from UVA rays, which are also damaging and dangerous.
Why did Yungskin choose a SPF40 for our Sun Care?
Upon recommendation from – and consultation with experts, our team at Yungskin decided to develop a SPF40 sunscreen as it provides the best all-round protection.
Higher SPFs don’t give much more protection, yet they cost far more than our SPF40 – this didn’t make much sense to us.
The truth is, SPF50 does not offer significantly greater protection compared to SPF30 or SPF40 and misleads people into thinking they have more protection than they actually do.
Additionally, to obtain broad spectrum protection, the UVA protection should be at least 1/3 of the UVB protection.
High SPF sunscreens usually offer far greater UVB than UVA protection, thus offering a false sense of full protection.
For best protection, experts recommend applying the proper amount (2mg/cm2 of skin, or about one ounce for full body coverage), and reapplying every 2 hours.
The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) scale is not linear:
- SPF 40 blocks 97% of UVB rays
- SPF 50 blocks 98% of UVB rays
One way of looking at this is that SPF 50 sunscreen only gives you 1% more protection than SPF40 sunscreen.
Yungskin™ Sun Care SPF40 (100ml) is a high factor UVA & UVB protection product, CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) approved and SPF validated by SANS 1557/European COLIPA Standard.
